The training focused on medical interventions to which intersex people are subjected, basic concepts of LGBTI+, lawyer-client relationship.
The training was held on March 16, 2024 at the Ankara Bar Association Training Center (ABEM).
The event started with a presentation by Belgin Günay from Inter Solidarity. Günay started by explaining gender characteristics and intersex status.
Afterwards, she talked about the medical interventions and genital mutilations that intersex people are subjected to in order to conform to non-essential and binary gender norms, as well as the violations that intersex people face in social life, employment, and the obstacles they face in terms of their freedom to seek rights and access to justice.
In the second session, Remzi Altunpolat explained the basic concepts of LGBTI+. Altunpolat shared the history of the LGBTI+ rights struggle and explained how the violations that LGBTI+’s are subjected to have shaped the struggle for rights, definitions and concepts.
In the last session, Defne Güzel from Kaos GL talked about the issues to be considered in the lawyer-client relationship. Güzel explained the discriminatory practices that LGBTI+ clients are frequently exposed to, rights violations and the obstacles to LGBTI+’s access to justice.
Afterwards, Lawyer Hayriye Kara from Kaos GL gave examples of what lawyers should pay attention to especially in practice.
